  • Prof Melvin Hoare will present a talk entitled "Sequential star formation and H II regions in the spiral arms of Galaxies"

    Prof Melvin Hoare will present a talk entitled "Sequential star formation and H II regions in the spiral arms of Galaxies". Everyone is welcome to attend but please note that there is a visitors fee of £4 this evening as we have guest speaker, (accompanied family children are free). The talk will be in the small ballroom in the Carleton Center.

     

    Ongoing efforts to map out where stars form in our Galaxy will be described. Recent work has shown that the Milky Way is a barred galaxy with two stellar arms. However, the massive star formation regions are distributed in four gaseous spiral arms. The various mechanisms that may trigger the formation of new stars will be described and how this might fit into a galaxy-wide picture of star formation.

    Professor Philippa Browning of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics will be presenting a talk entitled "Our Active Sun"
